Remove Intimate Images Posted Without Consent on Instagram and Facebook
If an intimate photo or video of you is on Instagram or Facebook without your consent, report it in the app and, the same day, complain to Meta's grievance officer for India: Rule 3(2)(b) of the IT Rules 2021 requires removal within two hours of that complaint. Both apps are StopNCII partners, so an adult can hash the image to have re-uploads detected and blocked. RepuLex runs these steps as a paid, confidential service and sweeps Telegram, adult sites and Google for copies. If you are under 18, we do not take the matter on; it goes to the police and cybercrime.gov.in, and we help you get there.
NDA before any case discussion. Send only the URLs; never send us the file. If the person shown is under 18, we do not take the matter: report it to the police and at cybercrime.gov.in.
What Meta removes under its own rules, and the route with a legal deadline
Instagram and Facebook apply largely the same Meta rules, which bar intimate images of a person shared without that person's consent, and threats to share them. Nudity is restricted on both apps anyway, but the report that matters is the non-consent one: it says the picture is of you and was published without your agreement, which is the question Meta's rules and Indian law both turn on.
In the Instagram app, open the three-dot menu on the post, Reel, Story or profile, choose Report, pick the reason covering nudity or sexual activity, then the option for private images shared, or threatened to be shared, without consent. Facebook's path starts from the same menu on a post, photo, group post or listing. Meta rewords these menus from time to time; look for the option that says the image is of you. Someone you trust can report on your behalf, which helps if the account has blocked you.
Record the evidence first, because a successful report removes it: the link to each post and to the account, the handle, and screenshots showing the account name, date and caption, with the image itself cropped or covered. Never forward the file to anyone, including us; the links are enough for every complaint on this page.
An in-app report asks Meta to apply its own rules; it names no law and no time within which the platform must act. Two routes carry more weight: Meta's privacy and legal reporting channel in its Help Centre, which also works from a link when you cannot open the post, and the complaint to Meta's grievance officer for India, which invokes Rule 3(2)(b) by name and starts the clock the Rules fix. The Help Centre also has guidance on intimate images and on sextortion.
The India grievance officer and Rule 3(2)(b): two hours by statute
Instagram and Facebook are significant social media intermediaries under the IT Rules 2021, so Meta must keep a Resident Grievance Officer in India (Rule 4(1)(c)) and publish the officer's name and contact details prominently (Rule 3(2)(a)). Rule 3(2)(c) adds a mechanism for receiving complaints about intimate content specifically.
Rule 3(2)(b) sets the clock. Since 20 February 2026, when G.S.R. 120(E) came into force, an intermediary must remove or disable access to content within two hours of a complaint by the person shown, or someone acting on their behalf, where it exposes a private area, shows full or partial nudity or a sexual act, or impersonates the person, including artificially morphed images. The window was 24 hours before that amendment; pages that still say so are out of date.
People search for the grievance officer's name, email address and form. Meta publishes them in its Help Centre on a page for users in India; search the Help Centre for the grievance officer for India. We do not reprint a name or address, because appointments change and an out-of-date contact costs hours this route does not have. The nodal officer is a different post: Rule 4(1)(b) requires a nodal contact person for coordination with law enforcement, not for users' complaints.
If the grievance officer decides against you, an appeal lies to the Grievance Appellate Committee at www.gac.gov.in. The quicker escalation for intimate images is often a court order, which Rule 3(1)(d) requires a platform to act on within three hours; the partner law firm's advocates can seek one. In Mrs X v. Union of India (judgment of 26 April 2023), the Delhi High Court gave directions to platforms, search engines and the police on acting promptly against non-consensual intimate images.
Every escalation starts from the complaint itself, so note the time you send it. It should state:
- the link to each post, Story, Reel or account
- that you are the person shown, or that you are complaining on that person's behalf
- that you did not consent to the content being published
- whether the image is real, or has been morphed or generated
- that the complaint is made under Rule 3(2)(b) of the IT Rules 2021
Someone posted my video or picture on Instagram or Facebook without permission
First work out which lane the post is in, because each has a different clock. If it shows you nude or partly nude, exposes a private area or shows a sexual act, or has been morphed or generated to do so, it belongs on this page and the two-hour route above.
If it is private but not intimate, such as an ordinary photo from your phone posted to shame you, a grievance complaint still reaches it: content invasive of another person's privacy is a category listed in Rule 3(1)(b), and a complaint asking for its removal must be resolved within 36 hours. If the post is false and damaging rather than private, it is defamation, under the residual 'violates any law' head, which takes the seven-day grievance timeline; our Instagram legal removal request page covers that route.
An account pretending to be you, with nothing intimate on it, is covered in our guide to fake Instagram and Facebook accounts. Impersonation sits inside Rule 3(2)(b) as well, so the two-hour clock applies there too.
If you took the photo or recorded the video yourself, a copyright report is also open to you: under the Copyright Act 1957 the author of a photograph is the person who takes it, and the author of a film is its producer. It is usually the second route rather than the first, because a copyright report can pass the reporter's name and contact details to the person who posted.
Sextortion in Instagram DMs: report, block, do not pay
Sextortion usually begins with a new follower or a hacked friend's account, moves quickly to a video call or an exchange of pictures, and turns into a demand for money, often with a screenshot of your follower list. At that point nothing is public, and that is when you have the most control.
Do not pay and do not send anything further. Save the chat, the account's profile link and handle, and any payment details it gives, such as a UPI ID, with dates visible; then report the account and the messages as a threat to share intimate images, and block it. Report the matter at cybercrime.gov.in, on 1930, or at any police station, wherever the offence took place (section 173(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023); that complaint is yours to make, and we help you prepare it.
Do Instagram blackmailers follow through? Some do, many do not, and no one can tell you in advance which kind you face. What is reliable is that paying does not end it: money tells the sender you pay, and a further demand is the common result. The better question is what is ready if they post: a StopNCII hash already registered with Instagram and Facebook, a report on file against the account, and a sweep that can start the moment a file appears.
Our sextortion guide sets out the offences: obtaining money this way is extortion under section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, with up to seven years under section 308(2), and the threat itself is criminal intimidation under section 351. If the person in the images is under 18, this is child sexual abuse material: RepuLex refuses the matter as an engagement and routes it to the police and cybercrime.gov.in, and we help you make that report. StopNCII is for adults and is not the route.
StopNCII and Meta: hash-blocking re-uploads
StopNCII.org is run by the Revenge Porn Helpline, part of SWGfL, a UK charity. It is free to use, needs no account, and is for people who are 18 or over now and were 18 or over when the image was taken. The image never leaves your phone: a hash, a digital fingerprint, is generated on your device, and only the hash is shared.
Facebook, Instagram and Threads are among its partners, with X, TikTok, Reddit, Snapchat, Bluesky, Microsoft's Bing, Pornhub and xVideos, so a matching upload can be detected and blocked or removed on each. WhatsApp, although owned by Meta, is not a partner, and neither are Telegram, Google Search or YouTube; a hash does nothing there.
Know its limits. It does not take down a post that is already live: report the post and file the grievance complaint, and let the hash guard against the next upload. It needs the file on your own device, so a video call recorded by a blackmailer, of which you hold no copy, cannot be hashed. It does cover images that have only been threatened. Keep the case number and password, which its Check Case Status page needs, and since StopNCII runs no phone line, treat any caller claiming to be from it with suspicion.
RepuLex never sees the file: StopNCII is a step you take on your own phone, and we walk you through it on day one. Our StopNCII guide explains what it is, whether it is genuine and how to use it.
Facebook-specific notes: groups, Marketplace and Messenger
On Facebook, intimate images often circulate in groups, including private groups you cannot see. A member can report a post to the admins and to Facebook; if you are not a member, the grievance complaint can identify the post by its link, or by the group's name and a dated screenshot. Where a group exists to trade such images, report the group as well as the posts.
Marketplace listings and Pages are sometimes built around a person's photos, presented as an advertisement or as something for sale. Report the listing or Page from its menu and file the Rule 3(2)(b) complaint: a listing that uses your images to pass itself off as you is impersonation, and intimate or morphed images are inside the rule in any case.
Messenger works like Instagram's direct messages: preserve the thread, then report it and the sender's account; nothing already delivered to someone's phone can be recalled by anyone. Facebook's grievance contact for India is published in Meta's Help Centre in the same way as Instagram's, and the complaint, the two-hour clock and the appeal to the Grievance Appellate Committee work the same way.
What RepuLex does on day one, and what the sweep covers
RepuLex works from the links alone, under an NDA signed before any case discussion. On day one we file Meta's report through its privacy and legal channel, the Rule 3(2)(b) complaint to the grievance officer for India on your behalf, and Google's request to remove personal sexual content from Search wherever the post or a copy appears in results. The same day we set up the StopNCII hash with you on your own phone and, if you choose to make one, help you prepare your complaint at cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.
Then the sweep. A post on Instagram or Facebook can be screen-recorded and reposted within hours, to Telegram channels, adult tube sites, aggregator pages and other accounts. We map every located copy and file against each on its own route: Telegram's abuse desk; the adult sites' non-consent routes, which typically act within 24 to 48 hours of a correctly filed report; and the hosts of mirror sites and their upstream providers. Our own working target is the same day: every copy found at the start filed against within 24 hours of instruction.
Where Meta or a host does not act, the partner law firm, Unified Chambers And Associates, issues a formal notice under advocate signature; where that fails, the partner firm's advocates can seek a court order, which Rule 3(1)(d) requires a platform to act on within three hours, with directions to search engines to de-index. After removal is confirmed, monitoring continues and re-uploads are filed against as they appear. No one can promise that a platform will act, and we do not.
This is a paid service, quoted as a sweep across every located copy once the spread is mapped, with concessional rates for individuals and no emergency surcharge. Fees are payable in advance, and any URL not removed within the agreed timeline is refunded in full. Every matter is handled under NDA, and no client is ever named.
Where it is, how it is removed, how long it typically takes
| Where it is | How it is removed | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram feed post or carousel | Report from the post's menu under the option for private images shared without consent; the same day, a Rule 3(2)(b) complaint to Meta's grievance officer for India with the post link; a StopNCII hash against re-uploads | Two hours from the complaint, by statute; actual response varies |
| Instagram Story or Highlight | Record the account, the time and the Story link before it expires, then report from the Story's menu; the grievance complaint names the account and when the Story was live, since viewers may already have saved it | Two hours by statute; act before the Story expires and the evidence goes with it |
| Reel | Report the Reel and every repost or remix you can find; the StopNCII hash matters most here, because Reels are often downloaded and posted again | Two hours by statute for each located copy |
| Direct message (Instagram DM or Messenger) | Preserve the thread, then report the messages and the sender's account; a threat to share images is sextortion and is reported as one | Two hours by statute for what Meta holds; copies already on a phone cannot be recalled |
| Facebook group, public or private | A member reports the post to the admins and to Facebook; the grievance complaint names the post link, or the group and a dated screenshot; a group that exists to trade such images is reported as a group | Two hours by statute |
| Facebook profile, Page or Marketplace listing | Report the post, Page or listing from its menu; a listing that uses your photos to pass itself off as you is impersonation, inside the same rule | Two hours by statute |
| Copies outside Meta | Telegram's abuse desk, the adult sites' non-consent routes, notices to the hosts of mirror sites, and Google's form for personal sexual content, all filed in the same sweep | No published turnaround on Telegram; typically 24 to 48 hours on the major adult sites; days for Google Search |
An intermediary must remove or disable access within two hours of a complaint by the person shown, or by someone on their behalf, where content exposes a private area, shows full or partial nudity or a sexual act, or impersonates the person, including artificially morphed images. The two-hour window has applied since 20 February 2026 under G.S.R. 120(E); it was 24 hours before. Rule 3(2)(c) requires a mechanism for receiving exactly these complaints.
A court order, or a reasoned government intimation, must be acted on within three hours (Rule 3(1)(d)). Rule 3(2)(a) requires the grievance officer's name and contact details to be published prominently, and grievances to be resolved within seven days, or within 36 hours where the complaint asks for removal of content in most of the categories listed in Rule 3(1)(b); defamation is not one of them. An appeal against the grievance officer's decision lies to the Grievance Appellate Committee at www.gac.gov.in.
Section 66E punishes capturing, publishing or transmitting an image of any person's private area without consent, in circumstances violating privacy, with up to three years' imprisonment, a fine of up to ₹2 lakh, or both. Section 67A punishes publishing or transmitting sexually explicit material with up to five years and a fine of up to ₹10 lakh on first conviction. Classified by the first-conviction term under section 77B, 66E is cognizable and bailable, and 67A cognizable and non-bailable.
Section 77 (voyeurism, formerly IPC 354C) protects women: one to three years and a fine on first conviction, and its Explanation 2 makes dissemination an offence even where she agreed to the image being taken. Section 308 covers extortion, with up to seven years under section 308(2). Section 351 covers criminal intimidation, with up to seven years under section 351(3) for certain threats, including a threat to impute unchastity to a woman.
In its judgment of 26 April 2023 in W.P.(Crl.) 1505/2021, the Delhi High Court gave directions to platforms, search engines and the police on acting promptly against non-consensual intimate images. MeitY's Standard Operating Procedure of 11 November 2025 requires significant social media intermediaries, Instagram and Facebook among them, to use hash-matching and crawler technology against re-uploads, with hashes shared with the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre through the Sahyog portal.
Straight answers
How do I report intimate images posted on Instagram without my consent?+
Save the links and dated screenshots first. Then open the menu on the post, Reel, Story or profile, choose Report, and pick the option for private images shared without consent rather than general nudity. The same day, complain to Meta's grievance officer for India under Rule 3(2)(b) of the IT Rules 2021, which requires removal within two hours of your complaint; the contact route is on Meta's Help Centre page for users in India. If you are 18 or over, create a StopNCII hash on your own phone so that a re-upload to Instagram, Facebook or Threads can be detected and blocked.
Who is Instagram's grievance officer in India?+
Meta appoints a grievance officer for India and publishes the officer's name and contact details in its Help Centre, as Rule 3(2)(a) of the IT Rules 2021 requires. We do not reprint the name or email here, because appointments change and an out-of-date contact wastes the hours that matter; search Meta's Help Centre for the grievance officer for India and use the route it gives. The nodal contact person is a different role, for coordination with law enforcement, not for users' complaints.
Does Instagram have to remove intimate images within two hours?+
The statute says so. Since 20 February 2026, Rule 3(2)(b) of the IT Rules 2021 requires a platform to remove or disable access to intimate, nude, sexual or morphed images of a person, and to content impersonating them, within two hours of a complaint by that person or someone on their behalf. That is the legal duty, not a description of what happens: response times vary in practice, and no one, RepuLex included, can promise that Meta will meet it. Where it does not, the complaint record supports an appeal to the Grievance Appellate Committee or an application to court.
Can RepuLex make Meta act faster?+
No one can make a platform act on demand, and we do not promise it. What changes the pace is filing correctly the first time and escalating on time. Where a complaint is not acted on, the partner law firm, Unified Chambers And Associates, issues a formal notice under advocate signature, and where that fails, its advocates can seek a court order; Rule 3(1)(d) of the IT Rules 2021 requires a platform to act on a court order within three hours. Meanwhile the sweep deals with the copies elsewhere.
Will the person who posted it learn my name?+
Not from Meta's reporting. Instagram and Facebook do not tell an account who reported it under their own rules; the exception is a copyright report, where the reporter's details can be passed to the person who posted, which is why that route comes second. A police complaint is different: if a case proceeds, the accused is entitled to see the complaint against them. RepuLex signs an NDA before any case discussion and never names a client.
How do I report sextortion on Instagram?+
Do not pay and do not send anything further. Save the chat, the account's profile link and any payment details it demands, with the dates visible, then report the account and the messages as a threat to share intimate images, and block it. Report the matter at cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930. If you are 18 or over and have the images, a StopNCII hash registered now lets Instagram and Facebook detect and block a matching upload. If the person threatened is under 18, go to the police and cybercrime.gov.in: RepuLex will not take the matter on as an engagement, but will help you make that report.
I sent the photo myself. Is it still illegal for them to post it?+
Yes. Section 66E of the IT Act 2000 punishes publishing or transmitting an image of a person's private area without consent, with up to three years' imprisonment, a fine of up to ₹2 lakh, or both, and sending a photo privately is not consent to publish it. For women, Explanation 2 to section 77 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 makes dissemination an offence even where she agreed to the image being taken. The two-hour removal duty under Rule 3(2)(b) of the IT Rules 2021 applies whoever took the picture.
Instagram grievance officer India
