AmbitionBox Review Removal in India: Legal Removal of Defamatory and Fake Employer Reviews

AmbitionBox puts a Report option beneath every review and lets a registered employer respond; use both first. A genuine negative review from a real employee is lawful, and no notice will remove it. What RepuLex removes is narrower: reviews that state false facts, reviews by people who never worked for you, reviews written in the name of a real ex-employee who did not write them, and reviews posted to extract money. Platform route first, then the IT Rules 2021 grievance lane, then a notice and court order through our partner law firm.

Start With the Platform

What AmbitionBox will and will not remove itself

AmbitionBox is an Info Edge (India) Limited property run from Noida, and its FAQ answers the employer's first question plainly: an employer cannot remove a review about its company. It can report the review with a reason and evidence, after which it is moderated again, and a registered employer can respond to any review. A reported review still in line with the Community Guidelines stays up, the platform sells no paid removal, and the final decision rests with AmbitionBox.

The guidelines do list grounds on which AmbitionBox removes content itself: fake content, established with sufficient certainty on its own checks or on evidence the employer supplies; confidential internal information; and reviews the employer paid or coerced employees into writing. A reviewer is prompted to log in through a social account and verified no further; employment is checked against Naukri only once a review is reported. RepuLex takes AmbitionBox matters only where a review states a false fact, comes from a fabricated or impersonated author, or is a lever for money; assessment comes first, under NDA, and we decline the rest.

Fact Versus Opinion

Which AmbitionBox reviews are legally removable, and which are not

Indian defamation law treats an employer review like any other publication. Under section 356(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, which replaced sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code, a person defames another by publishing an imputation intended, or known to be likely, to harm that person's reputation; Explanation 2 extends this to a company. Exception 1 protects truth published for the public good, and Exceptions 9 and 10 protect an imputation or caution conveyed in good faith for the public good. A review therefore turns on one question: false fact, or opinion?

The Madras High Court applied that test in V.P. Sarathi v. S. Kiruthigha, Crl.R.C. No. 445 of 2023 (reported as 2023 LiveLaw (Mad) 263), over a Google review calling an advocate disrespectful and the worst lawyer. Justice V. Sivagnanam held that the internet is a free platform and an important means of expression; that posting false statements or derogatory remarks harming reputation would certainly amount to defamation; but that merely expressing views about the services received does not, and the complaint stayed dismissed under Article 19(1)(a). An ex-employee's account of low pay or poor management is the same kind of view, and it stays.

Is defamation by an ex-employee actionable?

Yes, on the same terms as anyone else. If the review asserts a false fact, accuses a named colleague of a crime, or discloses confidential information in breach of an obligation that survives exit, the employer has the three routes below and the person named has a claim of their own. An unflattering opinion about how they were managed or paid is not defamation however much it hurts hiring.

The Process

01

Step 1: AmbitionBox's own route, with the evidence that decides it

Every matter starts on the platform. A Report button sits with every review, and a report can also be emailed to support@ambitionbox.com with proofs; reported content goes to human moderators. We file it on day one because the fake-content ground is decided on evidence an employer holds and a reviewer does not: HR records showing no one matching the stated role, tenure and location was ever employed, and payroll extracts contradicting a specific claim.

The report quotes each false statement, states the fact that contradicts it and attaches the proof, with a signed statement from any real ex-employee whose name was used and any message demanding money. A short employer response goes up at the same time; it neither names the suspected writer nor threatens legal action, both of which the guidelines bar. The guidelines set no timeline; in our experience a decision typically follows within days.

02

Step 2: The IT Rules 2021 grievance route, resolved within seven days

AmbitionBox hosts what its users write, which makes it an intermediary under the Information Technology Act 2000, bound by the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021. It publishes a named grievance contact and a Noida postal address, as Rule 3(2)(a) requires. A complaint to that officer must be resolved within seven days of receipt under Rule 3(2)(a)(i), cut from fifteen days by the amendment in force since 20 February 2026.

Two limits apply. The 36-hour fast lane in the same rule covers the categories listed in Rule 3(1)(b) except sub-clauses (i), (iv) and (xi); a false review falls under sub-clause (xi), content that violates any law in force, so it runs on the seven-day clock. And a grievance is not a court order: since Shreya Singhal v. Union of India, (2015) 5 SCC 1, the actual knowledge that obliges an intermediary to act under section 79 arises from a court order or a government direction, not a private complaint, and Rule 3(1)(d) now says so in terms.

03

Step 3: Legal notice, identity disclosure and a court order through the partner law firm

Where the review survives both, the matter passes to RepuLex's partner law firm, Unified Chambers And Associates, whose advocates carry out the regulated legal work: a notice under advocate signature to the reviewer where identifiable, setting out each false statement, the proof of its falsity and the imputation under section 356; and, where the reviewer is anonymous, an application to the competent court for an order directing AmbitionBox to disclose the account's registration and access data, the John Doe or Ashok Kumar order.

A court order turns discretion into a clock: under Rule 3(1)(d), an intermediary that receives actual knowledge by an order of a court of competent jurisdiction must remove or disable access within three hours. A pay-or-it-stays demand is extortion under section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, whose own illustration is a threat to publish a defamatory libel unless money is paid; the demand is preserved and reported to the police. A review impersonating a named real person falls within Rule 3(2)(b), which requires the platform to act within two hours of that person's complaint; the lane applies only where the reviewer poses as an identifiable real person.

The notice is described in Legal notice for defamation in India, the complaint on the IT Act takedown page, and the disclosure application in How to remove anonymous defamation.

Pricing

AmbitionBox review removal cost

Standard-complexity removal is ₹99,999 per URL, fixed, with no monthly retainer; several reviews on one company page are priced as a package, ₹2,49,999 for 3 URLs or ₹7,49,999 for 10. A news article, court record or legal-database listing repeating the allegation is quoted separately from ₹1,00,000, because it goes to an editorial or legal desk. Emergency handling carries a 50% premium.

Payment is 100% in advance, paired with the refund in clause 4.5 of our terms: 100% where a URL is not removed within the agreed timeline, including where the platform refuses; 100% where we decline the matter after assessment; 75% where the client withdraws mid-timeline, the balance being a cancellation charge. An NDA is executed before any review is discussed.

Same Law, Different Forms

Glassdoor, AmbitionBox and Indeed: the same law, different forms

The three employer-review platforms differ in where they sit, not in the law that reaches them. AmbitionBox is Indian-owned with an Indian grievance contact, and its fake-content ground answers to HR evidence; Glassdoor and Indeed are operated from outside India and run their own legal-request processes, which typically takes longer, though an Indian court order still reaches them.

The Glassdoor review removal service covers that platform, with a guide to what works in 2026, from the grievance complaint to identifying the reviewer and clearing the search result. Reviews on several platforms are one matter with one evidence set.

Frequently Asked

AmbitionBox Review Removal — FAQ

Can AmbitionBox reviews be deleted?+

Not by the employer; AmbitionBox says so in its own FAQ. A reported review is moderated again, and one the platform finds fake or in breach of its Community Guidelines is removed. A review that is false as to fact, impersonates a real person or is used to demand money can be removed through the IT Rules 2021 grievance route and, where necessary, a court order. A genuine negative review cannot be.

How long does AmbitionBox review removal take?+

The platform sets no timeline for a reported review; in our experience a decision typically follows within days. A grievance must be resolved within seven days under Rule 3(2)(a)(i) of the IT Rules 2021. A court order takes weeks to obtain, but once served the platform must act within three hours under Rule 3(1)(d). Nothing is guaranteed; the refund applies if the agreed timeline is missed.

Can I find out who wrote the AmbitionBox review?+

Only through a court. AmbitionBox does not disclose reviewer identity to employers; its FAQ says an employer sees only what is already public on the site. Where the review is defamatory and anonymous, the partner law firm applies for a disclosure order directing the platform to produce the account's registration and access data.

Is a bad AmbitionBox review defamation?+

Not because it is bad. Under section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, defamation is a published imputation that harms reputation. In V.P. Sarathi v. S. Kiruthigha (2023) the Madras High Court held that false or derogatory statements harming reputation are defamation, but merely expressing views about services received is not. Calling the culture poor is opinion; saying salaries are paid late, when they are not, is a false fact.

Do you remove genuine negative reviews from AmbitionBox?+

No. A truthful review from a real employee is lawful speech and no lawful process removes it. RepuLex assesses every review before engagement and declines matters that turn on tone rather than truth; where a review is genuine, the right answer is a registered employer reply. Commodity review deletion and review generation are not services we offer.

What does AmbitionBox review removal cost?+

₹99,999 per URL at standard complexity, ₹2,49,999 for 3 URLs or ₹7,49,999 for 10; news, court-reported and legal-database URLs are quoted separately from ₹1,00,000. Payment is 100% in advance, and 100% is refunded for any URL not removed within the agreed timeline, including where the platform refuses. An NDA is signed before the review is discussed.
